Holy garments of high priest

Holy garments of high priest

The LORD instructed Moses to make holy garments for Aaron and garments for his sons to serve Him as priests

Exodus 28

1

“Next, have your brother Aaron brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, to serve Me as priests.

2

Make holy garments for your brother Aaron, to give him glory and splendor.

3

You are to instruct all the skilled craftsmen, whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom, to make garments for Aaron’s consecration, so that he may serve Me as priest.

4

These are the garments that they shall make:

a breastpiece,

an ephod,

a robe,

a woven tunic,

a turban,

and a sash.

They are to make these holy garments for your brother Aaron and his sons, so that they may serve Me as priests.

5

They shall use gold, along with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine linen.

Linen undergarments

Exodus 28

42

Make linen undergarments to cover their bare flesh, extending from waist to thigh.

43

Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they will not incur guilt and die. This is to be a permanent statute for Aaron and his descendants.

Tunic

Exodus 28

39

You are to weave the tunic with fine linen

Sash

Exodus 28

39

and fashion an embroidered sash.

Exodus 39

29

and the sash of finely spun linen, embroidered with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Robe

Exodus 28

31

You are to make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth,

32

with an opening at its top in the center.

pomegranates and gold bells around the lower hem of the robe.

33

Make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn all the way around the lower hem, with gold bells between them,

34

alternating the gold bells and pomegranates around the lower hem of the robe

35

Aaron must wear the robe whenever he ministers, and its sound will be heard when he enters or exits the sanctuary before the LORD, so that he will not die.

Ephod

  • It was made of finely spun linen embroidered with gold, and with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn.
  • It had two shoulder pieces.
  • The waistband of the ephod was skillfully woven with the same materials.
  • Two onyx stones were engraved with the names of the sons of Israel; six names on each stone.
  • It was mounted into gold filigree settings and fastened to the two shoulder pieces.

Exodus 28

6

They are to make the ephod of

finely spun linen embroidered with

gold, and with blue, purple, and scarlet

yarn.

7

It shall have two shoulder pieces attached at two of its corners, so it can be fastened.

8

And the skillfully woven waistband of the ephod must be of one piece, of the same workmanship—with gold, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and with finely spun linen.

Exodus 39

3

They hammered out thin sheets of gold and cut threads from them to interweave with the blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine linen—the work of a skilled craftsman.

Exodus 28

9

Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel:

10

six of their names on one stone and the remaining six on the other, in the order of their birth.

11

Engrave the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a gem cutter engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in gold filigree settings.

12

Fasten both stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron is to bear their names on his two shoulders as a memorial before the LORD.

Breastpiece

  • It was made with the same materials as the ephod.
  • It was square and folded over double.
  • Twelve gemstones, with the names of the sons of Israel engraved on it, were mounted into gold filigree settings and mounted on the breastpiece; each stone had a name.
  • Urim and Thummim were placed on the breastpiece.
  • Four gold rings were fastened to the four corners of the breastpiece— two at the top and the other two in the inside edge next to the ephod.
  • Two gold rings were fastened on the front just above the waistband of the ephod, close to the seam.
  • Two cords of gold, one on each side—one end of each cord fastened to the gold ring at the top of the breastpiece and the other end to the gold filigree setting of the shoulder piece.
  • Two blue cords to connect the gold rings at the bottom of the breastpiece with the gold rings above the waistband of the ephod.

Exodus 28

15

You are also to make a breastpiece of judgment with the same workmanship as the ephod. Construct it with gold, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and with finely spun linen.

16

It must be square when folded over double, a span long and a span wide.

Twelve gemstones mounted in gold filigree settings mounted on breastpiece

17

And mount on it a setting of gemstones, four rows of stones:

In the first row there shall be

a ruby,

a topaz,

and an emerald;

18

in the second row

a turquoise,

a sapphire,

and a diamond;

19

in the third row

a jacinth,

an agate,

and an amethyst;

20

and in the fourth row

a beryl,

an onyx,

and a jasper.

Mount these stones in gold filigree settings.

21

The twelve stones are to correspond to the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.

Urim and Thummim

30

And place the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece of judgment, so that they will also be over Aaron’s heart whenever he comes before the LORD.

Four gold rings of breastpiece, two gold chains, two gold rings of ephod and two blue cords

On both sides of the ephod, one end of the gold chain fastened to a gold ring at the corner of breastpiece and the other end to the gold filigree setting of shoulder piece.

23

You are also to make two gold rings and fasten them to the two corners of the breastpiece.

22

For the breastpiece, make braided chains like cords of pure gold.

24

Then fasten the two gold chains to the two gold rings at the corners of the breastpiece,

25

and fasten the other ends of the two chains to the two filigree settings, attaching them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front.

Two more gold rings at the other two corners of the breastpiece

26

Make two more gold rings and attach them to the other two corners of the breastpiece, on the inside edge next to the ephod.

Two more gold rings on the front of the ephod, close to the seam just above the waistband of the ephod

27

Make two more gold rings and attach them to the bottom of the shoulder pieces on the front of the ephod, close to the seam just above the waistband of the ephod.

28

The rings of the breastpiece are to be tied to the rings of the ephod with blue cord, connecting it to the waistband, so that the breastpiece will not swing out from the ephod.

Turban

Exodus 28

39

make the turban of fine linen

36

You are to make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it as on a seal:

HOLY TO THE LORD.

37

Fasten to it a blue cord to mount it on the turban; it shall be on the front of the turban.

Garments of sons of Aaron

Exodus 28

40

Make tunics, sashes, and headbands for Aaron’s sons, to give them glory and splendor.

Bezalel and Oholiab

Exodus 31

1

Then the LORD said to Moses,

2

“See, I have called by name Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.

3

And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of craftsmanship,

4

to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze,

5

to cut gemstones for settings

6

Moreover, I have selected Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, as his assistant.

Exodus 35

34

And the LORD has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others.

35

He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and as weavers—as artistic designers of every kind of craft.

Exodus 31

6

I have also given skill to all the craftsmen, that they may fashion all that I have commanded you:

10

as well as the woven garments, both the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons to serve as priests

Moses anointed Aaron and his sons to consecrate them to serve the LORD as priests

Leviticus 8

7

He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him. He tied the woven band of the ephod around him and fastened it to him.

8

Then he put the breastpiece on him and placed the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece.

9

Moses also put the turban on Aaron’s head and set the gold plate, the holy diadem, on the front of the turban, as the LORD had commanded him.

12

He also poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to consecrate him.

13

Then Moses presented Aaron’s sons, put tunics on them, wrapped sashes around them, and tied headbands on them, just as the LORD had commanded him.

Exodus 29

29

The holy garments that belong to Aaron will belong to his sons after him, so they can be anointed and ordained in them.

30

The son who succeeds him as priest and enters the Tent of Meeting to minister in the Holy Place must wear them for seven days.
