Genealogy of Joseph

The birth of Josiah in the house of David foretold
After the kingdom of Israel was divided, a man of God was sent to Bethel from Judah to Jeroboam who led the people of Israel to sin by building an altar to sacrifice to other gods and worship them.
Yahweh foretold through the man of God that Josiah, who will be born in the house of David, will defile the altar that Jeroboam built for other gods.
1 Kings 13
1
Now behold, there came a man of God from Judah to Bethel by the word of the LORD, while Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.
2
He cried against the altar by the word of the LORD, and said, “O altar, altar, thus says the LORD, ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’”

Accordingly, the prophecy reached its fulfillment when Josiah reigned in Judah and did what was foretold.
2 Kings 23
16
Then Josiah looked around, and when he saw the tombs that were there on the hillside, he had the bones removed from them and burned on the altar to defile it, in accordance with the word of the LORD proclaimed by the man of God who foretold these things.

2 Kings 23
25
Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the LORD as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.

The birth of the Messiah will be a sign to the house of David
According to the word of Yahweh made known through the prophet Isaiah during the reign of Ahaz, the birth of the Messiah would be a sign to the house of David.
Isaiah 7
10
Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying,
11
“Ask for a sign from the LORD your God, whether from the depths of Sheol or the heights of heaven.”
12
But Ahaz replied, “I will not ask; I will not test the LORD.”
13
Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of men? Will you try the patience of my God as well?
14
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and His name shall be called Immanuel.

Word of Yahweh to sons of Josiah and Jeconiah, grandson of Josiah, through the prophet Jeremiah
Three sons of Josiah ruled in Judah: Jehoahaz or Shallum, Eliakim and Mattaniah.

1 Chronicles 3
15
The sons of Josiah:
Johanan was the firstborn, Jehoiakim the second, Zedekiah the third, and Shallum the fourth.

All his sons, who ruled after him, did evil in the eyes of the LORD:
Jehoahaz was captured by Pharaoh Neco of Egypt and in fulfillment of the prophecy of Jeremiah, he died in Egypt. Pharaoh replaced him with his brother Eliakim; he changed Eliakim's name to Jehoiakim.
2 Kings 23
32
And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.
33
And Pharaoh Neco put him in bonds at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem

Jeremiah 22
11
For this is what the LORD says about Shallum a son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah but has gone from this place: “He will never return.
12
He will die in the place where they have led him captive; he will not see this land again.”

2 Kings 23
34
And Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the place of Josiah his father, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz away, and he came to Egypt and died there.

Jehoiakim reigned eleven years; he served Nebuchadnezzar for three years and then he rebelled against him. According to the word of Yahweh made known through His prophets, He raised up enemies and sent them against Jehoiakim, and He sent them against Judah to destroy it because of the detestable sins of Manasseh.
2 Kings 23
32
And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.

2 Kings 24
2
And the LORD sent against him bands of the Chaldeans and bands of the Syrians and bands of the Moabites and bands of the Ammonites, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by his servants the prophets.
3
Surely this came upon Judah at the command of the LORD, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he had done

After Jehoiakim's death, his son Jeconiah became king; he reigned only three months and did evil in the sight of Yahweh. The word of Yahweh was made known through the prophet Jeremiah that none of Jeconiah's offspring would sit on the throne of David.
Jeremiah 22
30
This is what the LORD says:
“Record this man as if childless,
a man who will not prosper in his lifetime,
for none of his offspring will prosper,
none will sit on the throne of David
or rule anymore in Judah.”

Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, laid siege to Jerusalem and took Jeconiah captive to Jerusalem; and Nebuchadnezzar replaced him with his uncle, Mattaniah who was given the name Zedekiah.

Zedekiah reigned for eleven years until Jerusalem was captured by the army of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and Zedekiah's sons were killed and they took him captive to Babylon; he was the last king of Judah according to the word of Yahweh made known through the prophet Jeremiah.
2 Kings 24
19
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, just as Jehoiakim had done.
20
It was because of the LORD’s anger that all this happened to Jerusalem and Judah, and in the end he thrust them from his presence.

Jeremiah 21
5
And I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and a mighty arm, with anger, fury, and great wrath.
6
I will strike down the residents of this city, both man and beast. They will die in a terrible plague.
7
After that, declares the LORD, I will hand over Zedekiah king of Judah, his officers, and the people in this city who survive the plague and sword and famine, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to their enemies who seek their lives. He will put them to the sword; he will not spare them or show pity or compassion.’

2 Kings 25
6
and he was captured.
He was taken to the king of Babylon at Riblah, where sentence was pronounced on him.
7
They killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon.

Of all the descendants of David, who ruled in Judah, only Jeconiah, grandson of Josiah, survived the captivity and exile; therefore, the house of David descended from Jeconiah.

2 Kings 25
27
In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year Awel-Marduk became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison. He did this on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month.
28
He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon.
29
So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table. 30
Day by day the king gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived.

According to the word of Yahweh made known through the prophet Jeremiah, none of the offspring of Jeconiah ruled in Judah, but it was Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel and grandson of Jeconiah, who became the governor of Judah and was entrusted with the construction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after the seventy years of exile. So the house of David descended from Zerubbabel; he laid the foundation of the Second Temple and also finished it's construction in preparation of the coming of the Messiah to Israel.
