Yahweh and the Lord
The Hebrew word for God is Elohim; and in Scriptures, the Hebrew name of God who created the heavens and the earth is Yahweh. English Bibles make use of the word LORD—all capitalized, instead of Yahweh; and the Hebrew word for Lord, a title of reverence, is Adonai.
Exodus 34:5
The LORD came down in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed His name Yahweh.
Scriptures reveal that no one can see the face of Yahweh and live; whenever Yahweh has appeared in the physical world, in a vision or in a dream, He has not revealed His face.
Yahweh tells Moses: “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.”
Exodus 33
17
And the LORD said to Moses, “I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.”
18
Then Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.”
19
“I will cause all My goodness to pass before you,” the LORD replied, “and I will proclaim My name—the LORD—in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
20
But He added, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.”
21
The LORD continued, “There is a place near Me where you are to stand upon a rock,
22
and when My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by.
23
Then I will take My hand away, and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.”
Read: Did Moses or the Israelites ever see the LORD's face?
Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel see Yahweh's feet
Exodus 24
9
Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up
10
and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky.
The Man who wrestled Jacob—the God that Jacob saw face to face—is not Yahweh, for his life was spared.
From the time Yahweh appeared in a dream to Jacob, who fled from his brother, He was with Jacob wherever he went; Jacob did not struggle with Yahweh but the Man—the God he saw face to face, while wrestling.
Genesis 32
28
Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.”
29
And Jacob inquired, “Please tell me your name.”
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed Jacob there.
30
So Jacob named the place Peniel, saying, “Indeed, I have seen God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
Scriptures have made it evident that Yahweh and the Man who wrestled Jacob—the God that Jacob saw face to face—are distinct and can be identified by a careful study of verses:
Micah prophesied the coming of the Messiah—his origins are of old and from the days of eternity like Yahweh
Micah 5
2
But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel, whose origins are of old, from the days of eternity.
Psalms 93
1
The LORD reigns! He is robed in majesty; the LORD has clothed and armed Himself with strength. The world indeed is firmly established; it cannot be moved.
2
Your throne was established long ago; You are from all eternity.
Malachi made known the word of the LORD of Hosts and distinctly mentions the coming of the Lord—the Messiah to His temple
Malachi 3
1
Then the Lord you seek will suddenly come to His temple, the Messenger of the covenant you desire—see, He is coming," says the LORD of Hosts.
Psalm 110, a Psalm of David, is a prophecy of the Messiah; Yahweh says to the Lord to sit at His right hand
Psalm 110
1
A Psalm of David. The LORD said to my Lord:
“Sit at My right hand
until I make Your enemies
a footstool for Your feet.”
Psalm 80:17
Let Your hand be upon the man at Your right hand,
on the son of man You have raised up for Yourself.
Daniel 7:13
He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence.
Daniel 7:13
and I saw One like a Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven.
The aforementioned verses from the Scriptures reveal that the Lord, in His appearance, is in the likeness of Yahweh.
And when Yahweh created Adam, He made him in His own image and likeness, which implies Adam in his appearance was like Yahweh and the Lord; so also was Seth son of Adam.
Genesis 1
26
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.”
Genesis 5
3
When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son in his own likeness, after his own image; and he named him Seth.
However, it must be noted that the word Lord can also be used to refer to Yahweh
Psalm 8
A Davidic psalm.
1
Yahweh, our Lord,
how magnificent is Your name throughout the earth!
You have covered the heavens with Your majesty.
In David's prayer, he refers to God as Lord Yahweh.
2 Samuel 7
28
And now, O Lord GOD, You are God! Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant.
Note:
Because English bibles make use of the word LORD—all capitalized, instead of Yahweh, the Hebrew to English translation makes use of Lord GOD instead of Lord LORD.
In Daniel's prayer, he calls Yahweh: Lord
Daniel 9
4
And I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed, “O, Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of loving devotion to those who love Him and keep His commandments
In Isaiah 61, the Messiah says that the Spirit of Lord Yahweh is on Him because Yahweh has anointed Him.
Isaiah 61
1
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners
Isaiah's vision
Isaiah uses the word Lord to address Yahweh
Isaiah 6
1
I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted; and the train of His robe filled the temple.
5
Then I said:
for my eyes have seen the King,
the LORD of Hosts.”
