Jacob at Bethel: The stone pillar shall be the house of God

Yahweh appears to Jacob in a dream at Bethel

Genesis 28

17

And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”


Jacob sets up the stone pillar at Bethel

Genesis 28

18

Early the next morning, Jacob took the stone that he had placed under his head, and he set it up as a pillar. He poured oil on top of it

19

and he called that place Bethel


Bethel means house of God 


Jacob made a vow—The stone pillar shall be the house of God, and of all that Yahweh gives him, he will give Him a tenth

Genesis 28

22

And this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give You a tenth.


king Melchizedek—priest of God Most High blessed Abraham. Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything

Genesis 14

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,

and he blessed Abram, saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,

Creator of heaven and earth.

And praise be to God Most High,

who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.


Psalm 110 of David is a prophecy about the Messiah who will be a priest in the order of Melchizedek

Psalm 110

The LORD has sworn

and will not change His mind:

“You are a priest forever

in the order of Melchizedek.”


The Man who wrestled Jacob could not overpower him, and Jacob would not let him go unless the Man blessed him

Genesis 32 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

26 Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."


The Man blessed Jacob and said that his name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for he struggled with God—the Man who wrestled him—and with humans, and he prevailed

Genesis 32

28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome." 29 Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there.

Jacob called the place Peniel, for he saw God face to face, and yet his life was spared

Genesis 32

30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."
