Jacob at Bethel: The stone pillar shall be the house of God

Yahweh appears to Jacob in a dream at Bethel

Genesis 28

17

And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”


Jacob sets up the stone pillar at Bethel

Genesis 28

18

Early the next morning, Jacob took the stone that he had placed under his head, and he set it up as a pillar. He poured oil on top of it, 

19

and he called that place Bethel


Bethel means house of God 


Jacob made a vow—The stone pillar shall be the house of God, and of all that Yahweh gives him, he will give Him a tenth

Genesis 28

22

And this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give You a tenth.

Genesis 14

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,

and he blessed Abram, saying,

The LORD has sworn

and will not change His mind:

“You are a priest forever

in the order of Melchizedek.”


The Man who wrestled Jacob could not overpower him, and Jacob would not let him go unless the Man blessed him

Genesis 32 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

26 Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."


The Man blessed Jacob and said that his name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for he struggled with God—the Man who wrestled him—and with humans, and he prevailed

Genesis 32

28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome." 29 Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there.

Jacob called the place Peniel, for he saw God face to face, and yet his life was spared

Genesis 32

30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."

Yahweh foretold Rebekah what would happen to the two nations that would descend from Esau and Jacob—Gen. 25:23. Genesis 25 23 And the LORD said to her:  Two nations are in your womb; two people will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other,  and the older will serve the younger. This prophecy does not imply that Jacob was predestined to deceitfully take Esau's blessings from Isaac—when Rebekah asked him to do so. Rebekah, sister of Laban the Aramean, set out from Paddan Aram and went with her nurse, Deborah, to marry Isaac, son of Abraham. Genesis 24 59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men. In layman's terms, the book of Genesis, Chapter 1, gives an account of how Yahweh created the universe. That might not be convincing enough for people who doubt. A great place to start would be reading the book of Daniel, Chapter 2. He was a prophet who interpreted the dream of the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, who forgot the dream he had. Daniel not only was able to describe the dream that the king forgot but also accurately interpreted the dream by prophesying the kingdoms that will come into power after Babylon until the kingdom of God is established on earth. There is historical evidence to prove the accuracy of his prophecies. There are prophecies yet to be fulfilled. Daniel accredited his wisdom, knowledge and understanding to Yahweh.
